Cooking Toys
My boys LOVE helping me in the kitchen. Kid sized kitchens are always a hit. All the fun of a real kitchen minus the danger and the mess. One of my favorite budget friendly kitchens is this one at IKEA.
Building Blocks or Magnets
I have boys, so building things and then knocking them over is an every day thing in our home. I honestly don’t love legos because the classic parent stepping on the lego stereotype. My favorite building toys are the Magnetic Tiles. They are sturdy if thrown and don’t hurt to step on.
Learning Books
I like to read a story to my boys every night before bed, but during the day it’s fun to go through learning books. My all-time favorite book seller for toddlers is Usborne. You can go through their site or you can often find some of their books on Amazon. Three of my favorites are Lift The Flap Numbers, Lift The Flap Opposites, and Lift The Flap ABCs.
Sports Toys
Four year olds can have A LOT of energy. I have quite a few sports setups around my house for when the boys need to get some energy out. I love the Little Tikes brand because it works well inside or outside.
Exploring or Educational Toys
At this age kids are extremely curious. My four year old is constantly asking questions about everything. So why not foster that curiosity? Buy them toys that allow them to explore, ask questions, and learn! Some great examples are cash registers, tools, doctor or veterinary kit, bug catching kit, etc.
KiwiCo Box
My kids love the KiwiCo boxes. They are SO excited when their new box is delivered each month. KiwiCo boxes are filled with STEM activities, projects, and games. It’s a great mix of fun and learning. If you are curious to know more about it, I will link the article I wrote on whether they are worth the money here.
A Fun Trip
Often I find myself surrounded by piles of toys and I wonder, do they really need anything else? Every other year we try to forgo the toys and presents and take the kids on a trip for their birthday. This year we are taking Thomas, our 4 year old, to SeaWorld. A family trip or even a solo trip with just the birthday boy or girl is a fun way to celebrate without buying more “stuff.” Zoos, aquariums, and beaches are all great ideas to celebrate a birthday. We usually let them pick out one thing in the gift shop at the end of the day so they have something to take home and remember it by.

Quality Time
Quality time is a huge need and want at this age. If you can’t afford gifts this year, or you want to change things up, give them the gift of your time. Take them for ice cream or let them come with you to shop for their own gift. You can take them to the park or to a movie or have them help you bake a cake for their birthday. Just do something out of the ordinary with them to make them feel special.
I hope you got some great birthday gift ideas for your soon to be 4 year old from this, enjoy!
